Thursday December 18
Reminders:
- Tomorrow is the last day of school before winter break. We are going to have a pyjama day and movie day. Students can not wear slippers, or bring a stuffed animal to school. They can bring a fun movie snack if they would like!
Hello Families,
As we approach winter break, I want to strongly encourage all students to continue practicing their multiplication and corresponding division facts. When we return in January, we will be moving into more complex math concepts that require strong multiplication and division fact fluency. Students who are confident with their facts will be much more successful and less frustrated as the math becomes more challenging.
Even 5–10 minutes of daily practice over the break can make a significant difference. Practicing through games, flashcards, or quick mental math activities helps students stay sharp and ready to learn rather than needing to relearn forgotten facts in January.
Your support at home plays a key role in your child’s success. Thank you for helping your child build this essential foundation so they can confidently tackle the upcoming math concepts.
Wishing you a restful and enjoyable winter break!
Here are the sheets that were sent home for the students to practice their multiplication and division basic facts:
On Friday, December 19th, the Grade 4 students will have a Movie Day!
They can choose between IF, Abominable, or Sing
If a student does not want to watch a movie, they can do different art tasks!
IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES
December 19 – SPIRIT DAY: PJ Day
December 19 – Last day of classes before Winter Break
January 5 – First day of classes
REMINDER: NO CELL PHONE USE AT SCHOOL
Just a reminder that students should not have cell phones out while on the school grounds from the time they arrive in the morning until they have left after school. Students should also not be taking pictures of each other while on school grounds / posting pictures of each other online for privacy reasons. Please see the below that was sent out last year and the beginning of this school year for more details.
CBE K-9 PERSONAL MOBILE DEVICE POLICY
CBE restrictions on Personal Mobile Devices & Social Media Use in Schools are still in place this year. This policy complies with the Ministerial Order provided by the Government of Alberta from June 2024 based on survey feedback provided by families.
The CBE cares about the mental health and well-being of students. Restricting access to personal mobile devices and social media is expected to improve student achievement and learning outcomes. CBE strongly recommends students simply leave their devices at home, because in most cases, personal mobile devices are not needed to support student learning.
For students in Kindergarten to Grade 9, CBE will use ‘away for the day’ guidelines similar to what many schools have been using in recent years. Personal mobile devices brought to school including cell phones, tablets, gaming devices, laptops, smart watches, Bluetooth speakers/headphones or any personal electronic device that can be used to communicate with or access the internet must be powered off or set in silent mode and stored out of sight in student backpacks for the duration of the school day (including recesses and lunch, etc.).
If a student is found to be using a personal mobile device in class, at recess, or at lunch without permission from the teacher, the CBE will work with the student to ensure the rules are understood. We rely on good communication and other existing processes to ensure students know what is expected. When necessary, schools will use a progressive student discipline approach in working with students.
These rules apply to all students, with exceptions for students using devices for health and medical needs, to support specialized learning needs and for educational purposes.
For students who require access to a personal mobile device for health and medical needs, it is advised that parents complete and submit a Student Health Plan as soon as possible or contact Mrs. Brinson at mlbrinson@cbe.ab.ca.
For students who require access to a personal mobile device to support an identified educational need, families should contact the school to discuss this being included as an accommodation or support in the student’s Individual Program Plan (IPP).
For English as an Additional Language Learners who require access to a personal mobile device, a PMD Exception form will be approved by School Administration in conversation with parents/guardians.
Also, aligned with the Ministerial Order, the CBE will continue to restrict student access to all known social media platforms on the CBE network.
